How to Swap Ethereum for Solana: A Step-by-Step Guide
Exchange ETH for SOL on Zest — no account required, funds go straight to your Solana wallet. Covers addresses, fees, and timing.
Ethereum and Solana settle on completely different rails, and that difference shows up the moment you swap between them. ETH transactions confirm in a couple of minutes and cost anywhere from a few cents to several dollars in gas depending on network load. Solana transactions finalize in about 13 seconds and cost a fraction of a cent, with no separate gas token to budget for. Get the receiving address right and the rest of this swap is faster than most crypto trades you'll make.
This guide covers the full ETH→SOL swap on Zest: setting up a Solana wallet if you don't have one, how the fee and rate quote breaks down, what happens on each side of the trade, and the mistakes that actually cost people money on this specific route.
What You'll Need
Three things before you start:
- An Ethereum wallet holding the ETH to swap, plus a small extra amount for gas
- A Solana wallet address to receive SOL (Phantom, Solflare, and Backpack are the most common)
- A few minutes
No account or sign-up required — the swap goes directly from your Ethereum address to your Solana address, and the two wallets don't need to live in the same app. If you don't already hold SOL, install a Solana wallet first; creating one takes under a minute and doesn't require funding it in advance.
Setting Up the Swap
1. Open the exchange widget. Navigate to the ETH→SOL exchange page on Zest. The pair should auto-populate; if not, set ETH as the source coin and SOL as the destination.
2. Enter your ETH amount. Type how much Ethereum you want to swap. The widget displays the estimated SOL you'll receive, the current rate, and the minimum and maximum limits for the pair. Amounts below the minimum can't be processed automatically, so stay inside the posted range.
3. Choose a rate type. Fixed locks your exchange rate for a set window and guarantees the exact SOL amount quoted; Float settles at the live market rate when your ETH deposit confirms. Because both chains confirm quickly, the timing risk with either rate type is lower on this route than on pairs involving Bitcoin — but SOL is more volatile intraday than ETH, so fixed still removes real uncertainty on larger swaps. The full tradeoffs are covered in the fixed vs floating rate guide.
4. Enter your Solana receiving address. Solana uses one address format: a base58-encoded string, typically 32–44 characters, with no fixed prefix. It looks nothing like an Ethereum address — if what you've copied starts with 0x, you've grabbed the wrong chain's address from your wallet. Unlike Bitcoin or USDT, Solana doesn't have competing address formats to choose between, and standard wallet-to-wallet transfers don't require a memo or tag.
Paste the address carefully, or use the QR scan icon. After pasting, check the first four and last four characters against your wallet — clipboard malware that swaps in a lookalike address is a real threat, and the transfer is irreversible once it lands on-chain.
5. Confirm the order. Review the full quote — estimated SOL out, exchange rate, fee breakdown, and rate expiry time if you picked fixed — then click Exchange to generate your deposit instructions.
Sending Your Ethereum
After confirming, you'll see a unique ETH deposit address with the exact amount to send. Open your Ethereum wallet and initiate the transfer.
Budget for gas separately from the swap amount. A standard ETH transfer uses roughly 21,000 gas units. At a 10 gwei base fee that's about 0.00021 ETH — small, but if your wallet balance exactly matches the swap amount, the send fails with an insufficient funds error. Keep at least 0.001 ETH in reserve beyond what you're swapping.
Send from a self-custodial wallet, not a centralized exchange account. If the order fails for any reason — amount outside limits, timeout, network issue — the refund goes back to the sending Ethereum address. Custodial exchange wallets frequently reject incoming refunds or require a support ticket to release them.
The order page tracks progress through five stages:
- Waiting — monitoring for your ETH deposit on-chain
- Confirmation — deposit detected; counting confirmations
- Exchanging — converting ETH to SOL
- Sending — dispatching SOL to your address
- Complete — SOL has arrived
Fees and Timing
The quote you see before confirming bundles the exchange fee and the outgoing SOL network fee. The only cost outside that quote is the ETH gas fee your own wallet charges to send the deposit — that shows up as a separate line in your wallet, not in the swap quote.
Solana's own network fee is close to irrelevant to your total cost: a standard transfer costs around 0.000005 SOL, a fraction of a cent even when SOL is trading high. Ethereum's gas fee is the variable one, and it's the main cost lever on this route — sending during low-congestion periods (weekends, off-peak US hours) typically costs less than sending during a busy market session.
| Chain | Typical confirmation wait | What determines it |
|---|---|---|
| Ethereum | 2–6 minutes | ~12s block time; exchange waits 12–30 confirmations |
| Solana | Under 30 seconds | ~400ms slot time; finality reached in roughly 13 seconds |
Solana's side of this trade is close to instant by crypto standards. Once your ETH deposit is confirmed and the exchange executes the conversion, SOL typically lands in your wallet within seconds — there's no multi-minute wait for the outgoing leg the way there is with Bitcoin. Total end-to-end time is usually 5–10 minutes, with almost all of it spent waiting on the Ethereum confirmation stage.
If Ethereum is congested and your transaction is taking longer than expected, the order page reflects the current status — you don't need to resend. The deposit address stays valid for the window shown on the order screen.
Mistakes That Cost Money
Sending WETH or stETH instead of native ETH. Wrapped Ether and liquid staking tokens trade close to the ETH price but are separate ERC-20 tokens. If the exchange expects native ETH and you send a token that merely tracks its price, the deposit address won't register it. Confirm your wallet shows "ETH" or "Ethereum," not a lookalike ticker, before sending.
Confusing wrapped SOL with native SOL. Bridged versions of SOL exist as ERC-20 tokens on Ethereum and other EVM chains (via bridges like Wormhole). Zest delivers native SOL on the Solana network to a Solana address — if your only "SOL" holding is a bridged ERC-20 token in a MetaMask-style wallet, that's a different asset living on a different chain, and it can't receive this deposit.
Pasting an Ethereum-style address into the Solana field. Ethereum addresses start with 0x and run 42 characters; Solana addresses are base58 and never start with 0x. If the widget rejects your paste, you've likely copied the wrong wallet's address — double-check which chain you're viewing in your wallet app.
Setting gas too low on a fixed-rate order. With a floating rate, a slow confirmation just means you settle at a slightly different price. With fixed, if your ETH transaction sits unconfirmed past the quoted rate's expiry, the guaranteed amount lapses and you settle at the rate in effect once it finally confirms. Use your wallet's standard or fast gas preset on fixed-rate swaps.
Exceeding the maximum swap limit. The maximum shown in the widget is a hard ceiling, not a suggestion. Sending more doesn't produce proportionally more SOL — the excess is typically refunded after a delay and often needs a support ticket to resolve. For larger amounts, either check with support about higher limits or split the swap into multiple orders.
Before You Send
Run through this before hitting send on the ETH deposit:
- ETH is selected as the source, SOL as the destination — not WETH, stETH, or bridged SOL
- Solana receiving address is base58 and does not start with
0x - Address verified: first and last four characters match your wallet
- ETH amount is within the swap's minimum and maximum limits
- Gas budget in your wallet covers the deposit plus fee, separate from the swap amount
- Order URL copied if you're planning to leave the page before it completes
