No. Base has no native token. Every transaction fee, including ones for USDC transfers or Coinbase-linked apps, is paid in ETH.
Base posts transaction data to Ethereum as compressed blobs rather than expensive calldata, and its Fjord upgrade made the compression estimate more accurate, lowering that cost further. Combined with an execution fee that rarely leaves its floor, total fees are usually a fraction of a cent.
Part of every Base fee is priced off Ethereum’s live blob base fee at the moment your batch posts. A busy stretch on Ethereum mainnet, or heavy blob demand from other OP Stack chains sharing the same capacity, raises Base’s total fee even when Base’s own traffic hasn’t changed.
Coinbase incubated Base and currently operates its sequencer, but Base is a public, permissionless OP Stack chain — anyone can build or transact on it without a Coinbase account, and there is no Coinbase-controlled token gating access.
The Superchain is the set of chains, including Base, Optimism, and Zora, built on the shared OP Stack codebase. They share Ethereum’s blob capacity for posting data, so demand on one Superchain member can nudge the L1 portion of another’s fee, Base included.
Roughly seven days through Base’s official bridge, which waits out a fault-proof challenge period before releasing funds on mainnet. Third-party bridges can deliver in minutes for a fee by fronting the liquidity themselves. Deposits onto Base have no such delay.

Base is an Optimistic Rollup built on the OP Stack and incubated by Coinbase. Transaction fees cover execution on Base plus a small L1 data availability cost posted to Ethereum mainnet.
What is the priority fee?
Also called a "tip", this is paid to the Base sequencer to prioritize your transaction. During normal network conditions the tip is negligible — fractions of a cent.
Why is Base gas so cheap?
Base uses EIP-4844 blob transactions to reduce L1 data posting costs significantly. Combined with Optimistic Rollup batching, fees are typically a fraction of Ethereum mainnet — often under $0.01 per swap.
Base is an Optimistic Rollup built on the OP Stack, the same codebase that powers Optimism and several other chains in the Superchain. Coinbase incubated Base and still operates its sequencer, but the chain itself is permissionless: anyone can build on it, and there is no BASE token gating access or governance. Every fee on Base, including the ones for USDC transfers that Coinbase apps surface, is paid in ETH.
Like other OP Stack chains, a Base transaction fee is really two charges added together. The L2 execution fee covers the compute Base itself performs and follows its own EIP-1559-style base fee, which spends most of its time near the protocol floor because Base has far more spare throughput than it typically uses. The L1 data fee is your share of the cost of posting a compressed batch of Base transactions back to Ethereum as a blob, priced off Ethereum’s base fee at the moment of posting.
The L1 side got a second discount beyond the Dencun blob upgrade: the Fjord upgrade in mid-2024 replaced the OP Stack’s old FastLZ-based estimate of a batch’s compressed size with a more accurate Brotli-based one. Because the old estimate overstated how much space transactions would take up on Ethereum, Fjord lowered the L1 fee Base charges without changing anything about how the data itself is posted.
Base’s own execution fee is rarely the reason your quoted price moves — most swings come from outside the chain.
Most Base confusion comes from its Coinbase ties, not from the fee mechanics themselves.
