No. Every zkSync Era transaction fee is paid in ETH. ZK is the network's governance token, launched in 2024 — it isn't required to transact.
zkSync batches many transactions into one validity proof and only publishes the compressed state diff — what actually changed — to Ethereum as an EIP-4844 blob, rather than posting full transaction data. Spreading that cost across a batch keeps individual fees low.
They're separate networks from the same team. zkSync Lite (zkSync 1.0) is an older, payments-focused rollup with its own bridge; zkSync Era is the current zkEVM. Picking the wrong one when withdrawing from an exchange sends funds to a chain you didn't intend.
Roughly a day through the canonical bridge — a built-in security delay, not the time the validity proof itself takes to settle. Third-party bridges can complete faster for a fee.
Sometimes. zkSync Era has native account abstraction, so some dApps use a paymaster to let you pay in USDC or another token, or to sponsor the fee outright. Without a paymaster, gas is paid in ETH like any other network.
Part of every fee is priced off Ethereum's live blob base fee at the moment your batch publishes. A busy stretch on Ethereum mainnet raises zkSync's data cost even when zkSync's own traffic hasn't changed.
A ZK-rollup. Every batch gets a validity proof verified on Ethereum instead of relying on a fraud-proof challenge window, so withdrawals don't carry the multi-day wait Optimistic rollups like Arbitrum or Optimism use.

Try ZestHow do zkSync Era fees work?
zkSync Era is an Ethereum Layer 2 network where gas is paid in ETH. Fees reflect Layer 2 execution plus the cost of publishing transaction data and proofs to Ethereum.
Why does batching matter?
zkSync Era groups many transactions into batches before final settlement. Batching helps distribute Ethereum settlement costs across many users instead of charging each transaction separately.
What affects transaction cost?
The fee you pay depends on network demand, the gas used by your transaction, and Ethereum data costs. Contract interactions usually cost more than a simple ETH transfer.
zkSync Era is a ZK rollup built by Matter Labs: every batch of transactions gets a validity proof verified on Ethereum, so there's no week-long fraud-proof challenge window to wait out. Unlike zkEVMs that replicate Ethereum's bytecode line for line, zkSync Era compiles Solidity and Vyper contracts through its own zksolc/zkvyper toolchain into a custom zkEVM bytecode — often described as a "Type 4" zkEVM. Contracts behave the same way to users, but gas accounting is rebuilt from the compiler up rather than mirroring Ethereum's opcode costs exactly. Gas is still paid in ETH, the same asset used on Ethereum mainnet.
A zkSync Era transaction fee bundles two things into the single gas price you're quoted, rather than showing them as separate line items the way OP Stack chains do: execution gas for running your transaction, and pubdata gas for your share of publishing the batch's state changes to Ethereum. Since zkSync moved that data to EIP-4844 blobs, pubdata cost reflects compressed state diffs — only what actually changed in storage — rather than raw calldata, which usually works out cheaper than posting a full transaction record.
zkSync Era also has native account abstraction built into the protocol itself: every account, not just optional smart-contract wallets, can route through a paymaster. That's how some dApps let you pay a fee in USDC or another token, or sponsor it outright — the underlying gas is still ETH, a paymaster is just swapping it out on your behalf.
zkSync Era's own execution cost is usually a rounding error; what changes your quote traces back to Ethereum's blob market or to unusually heavy storage writes.
Most zkSync Era confusion comes from name collisions with an older product and expectations carried over from other rollups.
